Oh, this lesson is awesome! Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read. They really enjoyed the lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too.
The best part? The classes I did this with were excellent at reading quietly, even though many of them are struggling readers!
If you want your students to learn words for the purpose of remembering them and actually using them in reading and writing, you need to make sure they engage with their vocabulary in unique and meaningful ways. Keep reading. I like using continuums because they help students reflect on their understanding of the word, and they also give me a valuable quick check for understanding. Some of my favorite ways to use continuums are to ask questions like these:.
Gallery activities can work a couple different ways, but I love how they encourage students to think about new words creatively. After your students have been introduced to their word lists and have spent some time interacting with the vocabulary, assign each student a different word or words. On the day students bring in the objects, display them around the room in a gallery format.
You can use pictures instead of objects if you prefer. Ask students to walk around the room and take some notes regarding which words they think pair best with which objects or pictures. Then, as a class, hold a discussion. This one is always engaging and enjoyable — not to mention memorable.
Using a Speed Dating Protocol to Think Critically about Writing
Students will be able to identify and use appropriate databases to form an effective research strategy. Students will be able to differentiate databases based on functionality and content scope. This activity works best if all students are in the same discipline, although it can be scaled to include general research databases or multiple disciplines. Part C asks students to quickly identify a research topic and evaluate their databases by searching for that topic.
This will work if students already have a research topic in mind for an assignment. If not, you may wish to offer one or more examples for them to use, or skip it entirely.

Speed Dating is a discussion strategy that allows students to engage in several short discussions around a specific topic — from a factual conversation about a text to a discussion in which students share evidence-backed opinions on a topic. In this strategy, students read and annotate articles to learn about content material and annotate the articles in order to identify important information about an assigned topic or a topic of their choice.
Determine the purpose of the Speed Dating activity. Will students interact with one another in order to:. Determine the format of the Speed Dating activity. Will all students be involved in researching one topic, which would allow for a whole class Speed Dating, or would the class be divided into groups to explore different topics? A recommended minimum should include 4 – 6 articles, which would allow for 2 – 3 rotations of Speed Dating on one topic.

The lesson itself is left open for the teacher’s ability to remix it to their specific needs. Students can be graded in various ways but must use applied knowledge to do the activity effectively which inevitably constitutes for deeper level processing among the material. My students are not so good at participating in whole- class discussions, so I try to find different ways talk about our weekends each Monday. I wrote about several of these ideas last fall , and today I want to add one more: Weekend Chat speed dating. Click here for my handout. Every three to four minutes, one row rotated so everyone got a new partner. I also pushed students to add details — Ok, so you slept. How long? At what time? Until when? I felt like the activity dragged on a little too long, but it could easily be shortened by cutting down on the questions or the number of partner rotations.
