Amy Krouse Rosenthal is fighting ovarian cancer, and doesn’t have much time left. One of her last acts was to write about her illness and her marriage in a “Modern Love” essay published Friday in the New York Times. It’s one of the most beautiful, poignant bits of writing I’ve ever read. Rosenthal, who has authored two dozen children’s picture books and a recent memoir, begins by describing finding out about her diagnosis. She wrote that she’s gone weeks without real food and falls asleep mid-sentence because of the morphine she needs. Despite feeling weak, she said she had to write the essay while she still could, because she wanted Jason, her husband of 26 years, to fall in love again after she is gone.
You May Want to Marry My Husband

She then goes on to list his qualities, each illustrating the ways in which her husband has shown his love for her.
It’s not often a personal ad makes readers weep, but a children’s book author with just days to live has crafted one for the ages. Amy Krouse Rosenthal was diagnosed with ovarian cancer two years ago, and now she’s written a heartbreaking New York Times column that acts as a dating profile for her husband, Jason Brian Rosenthal, in hopes of finding his next companion.
The column, titled “You May Want to Marry My Husband,” finds Rosenthal, who’s in her early 50s, paying a beautiful tribute to the man she met 26 years ago on a blind date — and fell in love with in one day. We were only I had precisely zero expectations about this going anywhere. The Chicago author, who also wrote the critically acclaimed memoir, “Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life,” was diagnosed in September , on the same day the youngest of their three children left for college.
Now, with “only a few days left being a person on this planet,” she wants to find a woman who will cherish her “prince” of a partner as she has. The man she’s spent nearly three decades with is “5-foot, pounds, with salt-and-pepper hair and hazel eyes,” writes Rosenthal in her best attempt to satisfy the profile expectations of the Tinder and eHarmony crowd.
Her husband stays in shape and he’s a good dresser with “a flair for fabulous socks. He can cook, he’s handy and he loves live music: ” O ur year-old daughter, Paris, would rather go to a concert with him than anyone else. She adds: “This is a man who emerges from the minimart or gas station and says, ‘Give me your palm.
Please ‘Swipe Right’ for My Husband
I didn’t know what to expect”. Modern-day marriages in Mumbai, or any other city for that matter, are constantly evolving. Nor were we set up by parents.
It seemed common knowledge that apps like Tinder had transformed single life and dating. Were they transforming marriage as well? I was.
Note: Amy Krouse Rosenthal died on March 13, , 10 days after this essay was published. You can read her obituary here. In June, , her husband published this response. I have been trying to write this for a while, but the morphine and lack of juicy cheeseburgers what has it been now, five weeks without real food? Additionally, the intermittent micronaps that keep whisking me away midsentence are clearly not propelling my work forward as quickly as I would like.
But they are, admittedly, a bit of trippy fun. I need to say this and say it right while I have a your attention, and b a pulse.

Newser — Jason Brian Rosenthal is a wonderful father, can flip a pancake like nobody’s business, offers gumballs to unsuspecting recipients, and is the subject of a singles “ad” as it appears in the most recent New York Times “Modern Love” column. Rosenthal doesn’t hold back on why any woman would be lucky to give Jason a new shot at love, singing his praises on all things domestic and romantic, all “based on my experience of coexisting in the same house with him for, like, 9, days.
